Dark sky places in India
Dark-sky lists tend to be optimistic, because the ratings are rarely measured and nobody is checking. This one is arranged by how dark places actually are, and is explicit about the difference between a genuinely pristine sky and a good rural one two hours from a city.
Three tiers, not one list
India’s dark skies fall into three broad categories, and conflating them is why so many trips disappoint. There is the trans-Himalayan high desert, which is world-class by any measure. There are the Himalayan valleys, which are genuinely dark but hemmed in by terrain and weather. And there are the accessible rural sites within a few hours of the northern cities, which are good rather than pristine — and which are what most people are actually asking about.
The distinctions matter because they determine what you will see. In the first tier the Milky Way casts a faint shadow and the sky is crowded. In the second it is unmistakable and structured. In the third it is clearly visible on a clear moonless night and noticeably diminished towards the horizon where the city glow sits. All three are worth travelling for; only one of them is a wilderness sky.

Ratings describe a site under good conditions. Dust, humidity, seasonal haze and above all the Moon shift the real experience substantially on any given night.
What actually makes a site dark
Distance from a city is only one of the variables, and often not the decisive one.
Distance from large population centres
Light domes fade gradually with distance rather than stopping. The glow from a large city remains visible on the horizon far beyond the point at which its streetlights disappear.
Terrain between you and the glow
A ridgeline blocking a city’s dome is worth more than an extra hour of driving on flat ground. This is why the Aravalli sites outperform equivalent distances in the plains.
Altitude
Less atmosphere above you means less scattering and better transparency, which is why the high-desert sites are in a category of their own.
Dry air
Humidity scatters light and softens the view. Desert and high-altitude sites are dark partly because they are dry.
Horizon
An unobstructed horizon adds a large amount of usable sky. A flat salt basin or an open plateau gives you objects that a valley site never brings above the ridgeline at all.
On inflated Bortle claims
Bortle 1 and 2 describe genuinely pristine skies, and they are rare. In practice almost nothing within a few hours of a major Indian city qualifies, however it is advertised. The rural sites reachable from the NCR — including the ones Astris runs — are Bortle 4, which is a dramatic step down from a city’s Bortle 8–9 and is stated as Bortle 4 on those destination pages rather than rounded upward. Treat any nearby "Bortle 2" claim as a marketing number rather than a measurement.

- How can I tell how dark a site really is?
- The most practical test is the naked eye: can you see the Milky Way as a structured band, and how far down towards the horizon does it survive before city glow eats it? Light-pollution maps give a useful prediction, and a sky-quality meter reading gives a number — but the eye test is honest and free.
